ScienceVT Evaluation for 2007-8 – post comments as WWW/EBI

The time has come for tutees of the Science Vertical Tutor group, F1 (www.ScienceVT.co.uk) to evaluate the year.  Please reply to this message with your evaluation in the What Went Well and Even Better If format.  Try to go into detail please in your response, thank you :) .

11-2 Rates of reaction homework – 18/3/08

Year 11 Set 2 Students! :)

Here are your homework questions.  Please leave your first name and initial, and post DETAILED answers.  I will not reveal them until our next lesson, so you can’t copy anyone elses!

A chemist investigates the reaction of marble chips with hydrochloric acid.  He measures the time taken for 100 cubic centimetres of carbon dioxide gas to be formed.

1) How might he collect the gas formed?

At 60 degrees C, with a 1M solution of acid, and using 1g of marble chips, the reaction takes 13.7 seconds

For each of the following changes, describe the a) effect on time taken, b) effect on rate, and c) explain why this happens, using collision theory

2) With crushed marble instead of chips

3) With a more dilute acid solution

4) At a lower temperature

Year 10 Set 1 Homework – post comments here!

Year 10 Set 1 Students! :)

Here are your homework questions.  Please leave your first name and initial, and post DETAILED answers.  I will not reveal them until our next lesson, so you can’t copy anyone elses!

A chemist investigates the reaction of marble chips with sulphuric acid.  He measures the time taken for 100 cubic centimetres of sulphur dioxide gas to be formed.

1) How might he collect the gas formed?

At 20 degrees C, with a 1M solution of acid, and using 1g of marble chips, the reaction takes 33.7 seconds

For each of the following changes, describe the a) effect on time taken, b) effect on rate, and c) explain why this happens, using collision theory

2) With crushed marble instead of chips

3) With a more concentrated acid solution

Mock SATs exam feedback

So the Mock SATs are now complete.  Here is your chance to give your opinion on how the tests went.  Please post any feedback as follows:

1) How do you feel you got on?  Why?

2) What revision techniques have you been using at home?  How have they gone so far?

3) Where do you think your weaknesses are?  What sort of question did you struggle on in the mocks?

Thank you :)

Make a book about The Solar System

For the next 3 lessons, your task, Year 8 Scientists, is to work in a group to produce a book with the title “The Solar System”.

Your book should include:

  • Front cover
  • Contents page
  • The order of the planets / mneumonic
  • Facts and statistics about each planet
  • Relevant pictures
  • Anything else that you would like to include

To get you started on your personal research, try the following links which will open in a new window:

And how about this?!  You can take a virtual tour of the surface of Mars here:

The moon is on there too (the moon is a satellite of Earth):

ISA Feedback

Attention Year 11 Students!  Following the ISA last week, I would like to read any feedback you can offer – in the WWW/EBI format (what went well / even better if…).  Please post comments to this message, you may leave your name if you wish.

Please note that comments are moderated – this means that someone checks that they are not rude or abusive before they appear on the blog.  This takes a little while so if your comment does not appear immediately, check back a few hours later.

Uniform crackdown

It’s that time of year tutees that we make a good check on your uniform.  Please remember that, in particular, school shoes should be black and smart.  No trainers should be worn in class.  Coats need to be dark in colour with no big logos please.

You can check out the full uniform policy near the front of your School Diary.

Mock SAT exams are here, but keep calm

Yes the days of reckoning are almost upon us Year 9 students.  On Tuesday 4th March and Wednesday 5th March you will be completing your mock SATs.  A little revision over the weekend – perhaps some of the activities on SAMLearning for example – would be a good idea to refresh yourself.

Good luck with the tests and remember we will use how you get on to put together a learning plan to prepare for the real thing.  Keep up the great work :-)

Vital Organs done; Earth and Space next up

Well done 8-2 on your work on the Vital Organs topic.  We will assess your tests on Monday.  Next up is the Earth and Space topic.  To get a head-start, you could have a search for the different planets on Yahooligans :-) .

How about this video from YouTube to get you started?

- a nice review of the planets in the Solar System.

Forces test; Burning and Reactions

Next up for Year 7 we have the Forces test on Mon 3rd March – make sure you revise – you could try BBC Bitesize for example :-) .  After the test has been assessed we will move on to the Burning and Reactions topic.  You can find lots of related videos on BBC Learning Zone Clips – look in the Chemistry section.  Enjoy.
